What is Squalane & Why it is the Key Hydrating Skincare Ingredient?
What is Squalane?
Squalene is a moisturizing oil found naturally in our skin to support our skin barrier function, making up 13% of our skin’s oil. Once we reach our 20s and 30s, our production of natural moisturizers like squalene slows down, leaving us with rougher and drier skin as we age. To combat the dryness, we need to supplement the loss of oil with topical moisturizers. Squalene itself as a raw ingredient is too unstable to use in skincare products, so cosmetic chemists use a process called hydrogenation to create squalane, which is more stable and skin-friendly. One of the richest sources of squalene is shark liver oil, and for years the cosmetics industry sourced squalene from sharks to create squalane. For obvious ethical reasons, we no longer source squalene from sharks, and instead use lipid-rich plants, such as olives, rice bran, and sugarcane.
P.S. Beia sources the squalane we use in our Daily Hydrating & Setting Mist and Body & Intimacy Serum from olives!
Skincare Benefits of Squalane
Supports a Healthy Skin Barrier
Since squalene plays a key role in maintaining our skin’s barrier function, when we apply squalane, it is recognized by other lipids in our skin such as ceramides and cholesterol to repair the barrier and help our skin appear youthful and radiant.
Delivers Weightless Hydration Without Clogging Pores
If you have oily skin and are weary of incorporating an oil into your skincare routine, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to squalane. Squalane is ultra-lightweight and penetrates 20 times deeper than other moisturizer oils. Squalane’s ability to penetrate deep into the pores, rather than clog them, makes this superstar hydrator non comedogenic and perfect for acne-prone skin.
Keeps Skin Soft And Moisturized
Squalane is an emollient, meaning it helps moisturize rough and dry skin. Not only does this keep your skin soft and supple, but it also improves skin texture and flexibility.
Contains Antioxidants To Reverse Damage
New research has shown that squalane contains powerful antioxidants that help to reverse UV damage, fight free radicals, and overtime, brighten skin to appear more youthful and radiant.
Whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin, squalane is the perfect addition to your skincare routine. Achieve glowing, hydrated skin ASAP with our Daily Hydrating & Setting Mist and Body & Intimacy Serum!
