The uncomfortable truth about your loofah
A loofah or mesh body puff sits wet in a humid shower for most of its life, which is close to ideal conditions for bacteria and mold to grow. Add in the dead skin cells it's designed to scrub away, and you've got a product that needs a lot more regular cleaning than most people actually give it.
How often to actually wash it
As a general guideline, a mesh puff or loofah should be rinsed thoroughly after every single use, and given a deeper clean about once a week. That deeper clean can be as simple as soaking it in a diluted bleach solution or vinegar solution for a few minutes, then rinsing well and wringing it out completely. The key part most people skip is the drying step: a loofah left balled up and wet in the shower stays damp far longer than one hung up and spread out to air out fully between uses.
Signs it's time to toss it, not just wash it
- It has a musty or sour smell that doesn't go away after washing.
- You can see visible discoloration, especially dark spots (a sign of mold).
- It's been more than 3 to 4 weeks for a natural loofah, or 4 to 6 weeks for a synthetic mesh puff, even with regular washing.
- The texture has started to break down or fray significantly.
When in doubt, replace it. A loofah is inexpensive enough that it's not worth holding onto past the point where it's actually doing more harm than good.
A lower-maintenance alternative worth considering
If keeping up with loofah maintenance feels like one more thing to remember, it's worth asking whether you need a reusable puff for every use in the first place. A single-use option, like a fragrance-free wipe, sidesteps the whole mold-and-bacteria issue entirely because there's nothing sitting around wet between uses. Our Refresh Wipes work well for days when you want a quick, effective cleanse without pulling a damp puff off the shower rack, whether that's post-workout, mid-travel, or just a lower-effort day.
If you do stick with a loofah, a few habits help a lot
- Hang it somewhere it can fully air dry between uses, not balled up in a wet corner of the shower.
- Avoid storing it in a fully enclosed shower caddy with no airflow.
- Keep separate puffs for face and body if you use one for your face at all (facial skin is more sensitive to whatever's growing on a shared puff).
- Write the date you started using it somewhere you'll actually see it (a sticky note near the shower works), so "how long have I had this" isn't a guess.
Quick answer
Rinse a loofah or body puff after every use, deep clean it about once a week, and let it fully air dry between uses. Replace it every 3 to 4 weeks (natural loofah) or 4 to 6 weeks (synthetic puff), or sooner if it smells musty or shows discoloration.
