How Often Do Older Adults Have Sex?
IDK about you all, but I’m totally hooked on The Golden Bachelor. No spoilers, but seriously—I can’t wait to find out who Gerry picks this month.
And if you’ve watched past seasons of The Bachelor, you’ve probably noticed that the older adults are doing things a little bit differently: There’s hometown visits, but no fantasy suites!
That said: Even though The Golden Bachelor contestants are forgoing sex doesn’t mean that all older adults are doing so.
Because honestly: Who says that sex has to stop as you age?
Over 76 percent of older adults aged 65 to 80 believe that sex is an important part of romantic relationships no matter your age, according to a National Poll on Healthy Aging.
And yep: Around 54 percent of older adults surveyed in romantic relationships reported that they’re still sexually active.
Basically, even though it's easy to worry about the future, you don’t need to fret about sex waning as you age. As long as you’re putting in the effort to maintain a satisfying sex life, odds are, you’re going to be just fine.
Trust: about 75 percent of older adults reported that they’re currently happy with their sex lives.
In fact, having more sex as you age can actually be great for your health, one 2019 study reports, as frequent sex was associated with lower rates of cancer, coronary heart disease, and other chronic illnesses in older adults.
All in all, you can rest easy knowing that amazing sex can be a lifelong practice. K?
