Bare It All Spotlight - Madeleine Frank Reeves (Deputy Editor at Cosmopolitan)
I’m Madeleine Frank Reeves, the Deputy Editor at Cosmopolitan. (Dream job alert 🚨!) I work across our print magazine, website, and social channels.
Nowadays, being an editor also means thinking about strategy and business, too. So whether I’m overseeing our site performance or brainstorming our next issue, there’s literally never a dull day in the Cosmo offices!
Did I mention I also write cover stories? Check out the time I ate breakfast with Sabrina Carpenter, hung with Lindsay Lohan, or talked marriage and movie-making with Nicola Peltz Beckham.
So, What’s Your Daily Itinerary Like?
5:30 AM - 6:00 AM → The Write Stuff! 📓
I’m a morning person—but I don’t leave my bed right away! When I wake up, I plug in the heating pad that’s next to my bed to stay cozy while I write three pages of brain-dump in my journal. (It’s a habit I learned from The Artist’s Way!)
Whatever comes to mind, I put it on the page, and it jumpstarts my creativity. I read 365 Affirmations, too, which helps me start my days with a super positive mindset.
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM → Make Me Sweat 💦
I get out of bed to take my supplements. (I love Seed Probiotics.) Then I make a double espresso and blend in Be Well by Kelly vanilla protein powder—my makeshift vanilla latte!
I take KKSWEAT classes daily. (They’re my fav.) Afterward, my lil’ sis and I have a daily ritual of texting what we’re grateful for—it’s how we stay connected even though she lives in SF.
9:30 AM - 6:30 PM → Sip & Seize The Day 💪🏼
For breakfast, I make a blood sugar-balancing smoothie with Be Well by Kelly chocolate protein powder, cauliflower rice, chia seeds, almond milk, and powdered peanut butter. (It tastes like a milkshake!) I sip it while getting ready for work.
It takes me 20 minutes to walk to my office. I listen to voice notes from friends on the way. It’s 10x more entertaining than texting!
At the office, I dive headfirst into everything: honing our magazine strategy, prepping writers, editing articles—you name it!
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM → I’m Home Free! 🌜
Depending on how much work I have, I’ll leave the office around 5:30 or 6:00 and walk home. My husband has usually cooked dinner and taken out our dog by the time that I get home. (Bless him!) So then I can just crash into the couch until bedtime.
7:30 - 9:30 PM → Or... It’s Social Hour 🍸
I attend brand events and parties at night, too. I’ve become much more extroverted since working in magazines and living in New York!
I will literally just walk up to people and say: Hi, I'm Madeline. How are you? Though it took a *lot* of practice to build that confidence.
The Big Secret, though? No party is ever as fun as it looks on Instagram! So, I keep Mondays sacred and never go out then. I’ve also gotten pickier about what events I say yes to overall!
You’re a confident and cool magazine editor! Can you tell us about a time you actually felt insecure?
In college, when I was first hooking up with my now-husband, I knew that he was moving to Birmingham (where his family lives) after graduating. Because I was so into him, I started looking at magazine jobs there. (They exist!)
“Friends” of mine told him I was doing this research, warning him that I was kind of crazy and overly involved. I was so pissed! Luckily, I won in the end. He thought my obsession was endearing. We’ve been together ever since!
Bringing “girl in the bathroom line” energy to social settings is a must for you. Please explain!
When you treat somebody as if they like you, they actually do like you more. I love forming bonds with women by being like: Break up! He doesn’t deserve you! Or: Borrow my lip gloss! Suddenly, you’re instant besties. I honestly try bringing this positive energy wherever I go. Trust: It’s worth it.
You get tons of free glam when you work in mags. Can you spill your fav beauty secrets?
Beia’s Refresh Wipes are my fav for a night out. I never worry about being like, Oh god, do I smell after getting all sweaty. I slip those in my tiny purse, as well as a lip liner and the Maybelline Plump gloss with chili pepper in it. (Careful with kissing!) I pack concealer, too, in case I blow my nose or have redness!
